Why Attend a MIAM?
Since April 2014, anyone applying to court about children or finances must first attend a MIAM, except in cases involving domestic abuse or other exemptions.
The MIAM gives you information about mediation and other dispute resolution options, helping you understand whether mediation might be right for your situation before going to court.
- Legal requirement before most court applications

- Explore alternatives to court proceedings
- Get advice specific to your situation
- Make informed decisions about next steps
How to Prepare
Coming prepared helps you get the most from your MIAM. Bring a summary of your situation, any relevant dates, and information about your children or finances depending on your dispute.
The mediator will explain the process, answer your questions, and assess whether mediation is suitable. There's no pressure to commit to anything at this stage.
